Three parts, sat in order

Know what you are facing.

The MRCOG is three examinations, taken in sequence. Each has its own shape, and preparing for one is not preparing for another.

    2
    papers
    100
    questions each
    150

    Part 3

    Clinical assessment

    14
    tasks in a circuit
    12
    minutes each
    5
    domains

A circuit of 14 tasks, one for each syllabus module, 12 minutes each including 2 minutes of reading. Every task is assessed against three or four of the five domains.

    1 course

The pass mark is set after each exam, from the difficulty of its own questions. Nobody can tell you in advance that you have passed — only where you stand.

01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 13 14 14 tasks in a circuit
  1. 01 Patient safety
  2. 02 Communication with patients and their relatives
  3. 03 Communication with colleagues
  4. 04 Information gathering
  5. 05 Applied clinical knowledge
This is a drawing of the circuit, not a route through it. The stations are numbered in sitting order; which syllabus module sits at which position is not something the College publishes, and nothing here guesses at it.

The Part 3 circuit

Fourteen stations, in order, one per syllabus module.

  1. 14

    Fourteen tasks, in one sitting

A Part 3 circuit is 14 consecutive tasks, one for each module of the syllabus. You move from one to the next in order, and you do not choose the order.

  2. 12

    Twelve minutes at each

Every task is allotted the same 12 minutes, whatever it asks of you. The time does not stretch for a harder station, and it is the same time for every candidate on the circuit.

  3. 2

Two of them before you speak

The first 2 minutes of each task are for reading it. What you do with those 2 minutes is a skill in itself, and it is the part of the circuit most candidates practise least.

  4. 5

Marked against three or four of five

Each task is assessed against three or four of these 5 domains — never all 5. Which ones depends on the task, and the College does not publish the mapping.

  5. 3

The circuit is a loop. Preparation is not.

You do not choose where a circuit starts, how long a task lasts, or which domains it is marked against. You do choose how you prepare for it — and that is a line you move along, at your own pace, for whichever of the 3 parts you are sitting.

That is the examination · This is the preparation

The approach

The examination is structured. Preparation for it should be too.

Answering a question is the part of study that matters most, so it gets a surface of its own.

  1. Preparation

    Study that answers back

Timed practice, worked answers and a record of what you have actually covered.

  2. Teaching

    Taught by people who examine

Small-group sessions and case discussion, structured around the parts of the examination.

  3. Curriculum

    Mapped, not assembled

Every activity sits against a named module, so you always know where you are.

  4. Assessment

Sit it before you sit it

Full papers under timed conditions, reviewed question by question.

What learners have said

What it was like

Most people who come to eMRCOG have sat the examination before. These are their words, as they wrote them.

  1. Alhamdulilah I passed! I still can’t quite believe it. It hasn’t sunk in yet. Thank you for everything and your tireless support and dedication in helping me get through this.

    Dr Fatima Ahmed

  2. I tell everyone who asks my suggestion for a course — only eMRCOG. Because I received the right directions and guidance, encouragement to do the books rather than a sole emphasis on recalls, guidance on tailoring the answers according to the tasks rather than templated answers.
  3. In my first attempt I was reading alone, I was not going with the group, so basic concepts were not clear to me, I spent hours and hours reading but then I forgot most, it was exhaustive. … My first attempt was in July 2025 and I didn’t pass, it was very painful to me because I was very close to the pass mark. I was depressed but I told myself I won’t give up.

    Dr Khadijah Baba’ango

These are quotations from learners who chose to write to us. They are not a sample, and they are not an outcome: the pass mark is set after each exam from the difficulty of its own questions.
